February Meeting in Review

Deutscher Verein Tours Dubois County Museum

The Deutscher Verein held its February meeting at the Dubois County Museum Thursday, February 17, 2005, with Janet and Dave Kluemper serving as hosts for the evening.   After a short business meeting conducted by President Bob Dilger, members were free to view the many fantastic displays of our history, such as a log home, farm machinery, furniture and appliances, as well as newspapers and photographs, veteran’s room and other memorabilia.   Members could also visit the gift shop.   The club made a monetary donation to the museum for use of the meeting room and as an expression of support for the museum.

During the business meeting, it was mentioned that Relay for Life Team #69 would have a Benefit Dance and Auction in memory of Tom Hulsman at the Jasper Moose Lodge on Saturday February 26, 2005, from 7 PM to 11 PM.   Tickets are on sale for $10 and can be obtained by contacting Rita Corn or Jan Hulsman.

Members were also informed that the next meeting is scheduled on March 17th at the VFW on N. Newton St.    The program will be by Father John Boeglin and Ms. Cheri Hartley, the local International Exchange Coordinator for the Education Foundation for Foreign Studies.   Additionally, Mr. Ron Flick will provide an update on the rebuilding of the Eckert Mill project.

Betty Kempf and Sharon Dilger won attendance prizes.   Dean Leininger won the special prize.

Area residents are invited to join the Deutscher Verein (German Club) to learn more about this area’s rich German heritage and to enjoy the monthly social gatherings.   Annual dues are $5 per person and are payable to the Deutscher Verein, c/o Rita Egler, Treasurer, P.O. Box 15, Jasper, IN   47547-0015.

Jasper Deutscher Verein Meeting Minutes

October 27, 1983

President Ron Kieffner called the meeting to order at Fritch’s Dutch Lunch.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

A balance of $1,227.02 was reported by Treasurer Jan Hulsman.

Tom and Jan Hulsman say, that nestled in the Georgia Mountains is a unique little German Village.   A great tourist attraction, Helen, Georgia offers many shops and fests for a worth-while vacation stopover.

Ron stated that eight couples enjoyed the Volksfest at Evansville.

We were again invited Germania Maennerchor members to a Dinner Dance on November 5 th, and also the Fall Concert and Dinner Dance on November 16 th.

Ron thanked Tom and Jan Hulsman, and all the members who made the food stand at the Strassenfest such a success.

Receiving trophies for Best Float and German Heritage, a grosse danke to Jim and Rita Corn and their crew.

More thanks from Ron to the Bed Race Crew, Gary Lautzenhiser, Larry Haas, Jerry Messmer, Greg Leinenbach, Dan Wehr, John Keusch, Harold Burton, and Jack Brandt.

Viel Danke to the Pig Roast Crew, Roger Weisensteiner, Stan Englert, Dennis Fritz, Dan Wehr, and Gary and Rita Egler.   The money collected at the church was donated to the nursing homes.

We are now a proud owner of a flatbed donated by Aristokraft.   Thanks to Jim Arvin and Gib Verkamp.   Also thanks to Ron Keusch for storage.

Anyone interested in the trip to Germany, please fill out the form on your Deutscherverein Zeitung and return to Ron as soon as possible.

For your favorite shirt, we how have a decal. The Sports Garden will be happy to put these on for you.

An article on Jasper’s Heritage appeared in the June 28 th issue of the Evansville Courier.   You can obtain one from the Courier Office.

Being a non profit organization, John Chappell is helping us to get our postage lowered to 5 cents.

Our next meeting will consist of a homemade wine judging contest.   Bring a least a fifth for sampling.   Prizes will be awarded.

The 1984 dues will be due in January.   If there are any address or phone changes, please contact LaVerne Kieffner or Rita Corn.

Ron stated that we will not have a dance this fall but plan to have one in spring.

Larry Hanselman presented a plague mit pferd mist, to Harold Burton, for his above and beyond call of duty clean sweep, before the Strassenfest Bed Race.

Attendance prizes were won by Stan Englert and Steve Dills with the grand prize going to Carol Seng.

The raffle prizes, German Beer Kegs, were won by Al Astrike and Dave Buehler.

Bob Hedinger, of Jasper Beverage, enlightened all of us with his interesting information on the art of brewing and aging beer.

A big thanks to Cotton and LaVella Singer and to the only “Whop” for a supper meeting hall.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Burton
