February 2009 A Message from our new DeutscherVerein President I am deeply honored to have been elected your club president for 2009-2010. Judy and I are very much looking forward to working with all of you. We anticipate many enjoyable and fun times at our meetings and our work projects. As in the past, I ask for your continued support for your Jasper Deutscherverein Club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing President, Virgil Gress, for all of his efforts during the past two years. His leadership helped make the past two years very successful. I would also like to personally thank Virgil for his mentoring. Also retiring this year is Ruth Wibbels as secretary. I would like to thank Ruth for her service as secretary, help in table decorations and providing door prizes. An additional thank you goes out to all the board members, with special recognition to Dan Wehr, Matt Hilger, Patti Goepfrich and Rita Egler. Finally, a very big Thank You to all of you for making our club successful and fun. As we announced at the January meeting, Jim Corn is retiring as our "Maypole Man". For the past 24 + years, Jim has maintained our Maypole with great care. That care included the landscaping, cutting the grass weekly and painting the Maypole. He personally took the Maypole home and saw that it was properly painted. THANK YOU, JIM for all you time and efforts! We are now looking for someone to replace Jim..any takers? Finally, I would like to encourage you to attend our monthly meetings and bring a friend. They are informative, fun and we share great food! We may even have a road trip or two within the next couple of years. Happy New Year! The journey, which began Sept. 9, 2008 retraced Lincoln's 1828 flatboat trip from Rockport to New Orleans, when the then 19 year old future president transported a load of produce for a local merchant. It was on this trip that Lincoln witnessed a slave auction while in New Orleans, an event that cemented his anti-slavery views. The 2008 trip was a joint effort by members of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, Spencer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Think Lincoln, Inc., and the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. Bob will be joined by Melissa Miller from the Spencer County Visitor's Bureau in presenting a fascinating power point presentation.
